My CD-ROM drive says LMS on one part (I think it's the PC interface card),
which I was told stood for Laser Magnetic Storage. The drive itself (and
the service manual) say Philips.

I would therefore try Philips first. Come to think of it, I beleive I've
seen drivers for some of these CD-ROM drives on the web - have you tried
searching?

I also seem to remember finding a Linux patch for at least one of them,
under the name lmscd (or something like that).
