AFAIK, the "disaster" used ASCII as well, but IIRC IBM wanted to make APL a
household word, and I think at first, they didn't even offer BASIC for it.

If y'all think OS-9 or Unix is cryptic, APL is *not* the programming
language for you. ;-)
