A number of years ago, I wanted to replace a similar tape reader with a
computer to interface to an NC Drilling machine. The interface was
parallel. Using an XT computer as the replacement for the tape reader, I
found the timing to be critical and I had to go to assembly language (the
rest was written in C) to get the timing loop fast enough not to lock up
or miss characters. While somewhat crude, it worked and I still have the
source if you are interested.
