That was common in the PET days. I paid $999 for a 32K 9" screen PET in
1978. The disk drive (2040) was over $1200. I got a C-64 and 1541
before I ever got a PET drive. OTOH, I waited so long, a 4040 drive
was $5 at the University surplus.
