I'd wondered if some sort of type casting could be used, but the sum total
of my BASIC comes from writing programmes on TRS-80 that I used to make
the neighbours think I was breaking into the school computers and changing
their grades. (: Lots of INPUTs and PRINTs and GOTOs but not much more.

The BASIC on my Convergent has MOD and TI Extended BASIC has the
functionality even if I can't remember the keyword, so .. well, there it
is.
