Wire recorders predated tape recorders. They were in use from the early
1930s, as I recall.
An excellent person to contact on this subject is Jonathan Winter of the
Bellingham (WA) Antique Radio Museum. You can reach him at
jwinter_at_pacficirim.net, tell him Kevin sent you! He has some examples of
wire recorders in his collection.
