Do you get a blue screen? This is usually caused by a bad chip.
Fixing a C64 is fairly easy. Without going into a specific
troubleshooting discussion, the easiest thing to do is to get a known good
C-64 (a dime a dozen at thrift stores around here) that you don't care
about sacrificing and begin replacing the socketed chips from the C64 into
the SX64 (SX-64 = C-64 in a portable case...internals are the same). Nine
times out of ten you'll end up fixing it within the first few swaps. I
can't remember which chips to start with and not having a C64 in front of
me, I can't tell you, but just start on one end and work your way to the
other. I'm sure someone else here can provide more specific information.
If this doesn't work then you might suspect a bad RAM chip which you'll
usually have to resort to soldering in order to replace.
