The first button restarts the Mac if it freezes. The other is called a
"programmers switch" and gives you the chance to type in some code that
will unfreeze it long enough to save your work before restarting. Sometimes
it works, sometimes it doesn't. For me, mostly it doesn't.
Try typing one of the following, followed by the return key:
