Another use, for those who indulge in programming: When you want to know
what's going on, or just want confirmation that the program reached a
certain milestone, what could be simpler than OUTing AL to a port? Small
enough so as not to push very many short jumps out of range, and if you
don't bother to remove THAT debugging code before shipping, nobody
complains.
