You may be thinking of a floptical.

I'm not sure if the magnetic head in an MO bears any relation to the
heads of other magnetic media drives. The reason for this thought is the
fact that the optical part, the laser, does much more than serve as a
guide for magnetic part. The laser reads, erases and does most of the
work of writing.
