X-1541 cable - beware

Okay, I have a question. Why would one connect a serial peripheral - the
1541 - to a parallel port on the PC? The 64 uarts maxed at 2400 baud
(at least for external serial, I think they could be programmed for up to
9600 baud) are they communicating with the 1541 faster than that?
If not, why not create a serial port adapter, preferably designed to
isolate the 1541 from expensive PC electronics?
