The ESDI drives I have used on PCs are either set to drive select 0 with no
twist in the cable, or drive select 1 with the twist in the cable.

That might be true for the early PCs, but almost every PC I have seen uses a
twisted cable for the HD as well as the floppies (and of course the twist is
different for HDs than the floppies.)
