reading tapes in bad conditions

Hi,

This afternoon while reading some old tapes I discovered that they had been
damaged by the previous owner. In particular one, that could be mounted
without problems would just produce tons of errors. I decided to unrole
it carefully and discovered that just after the aluminum (?) mark it had been
probably crumbled up.

Anybody know some trick to bring back at least part of it? I tried skipping
blocks, records and files without success? I'm using VMS 7.2 and a Cipher SCSI
tape.

TIA

e.
