I'm not sure if someone else hasn't let you know.
you need to send request to the list server and
not to the list. If you look at your full header
from the list, you'll see:

I would suggest that you try sending your meassage to:
classiccmp_at_u.washington.edu

PS Do try to send to list with the HTML turned off. It
adds a lot of overhead to the people with modems.
