My first exposure to "WCS" was in the context of microcode - on a VAX-11/750.
I, too, was surprised to see them reuse "WCS" on the A1000, given what it does.

The only place I've seen the term "slushware" used is on the DECmate boxes.
AFAIK, its use there matches your use here.
