My ex-father still have that wooden red handled behamoth exactly
what you described! Still working and truly classic-o!

I don't mean to be snide-sounding, resist that instinctual reflex and
hot stuff! Let that soldering iron fall and burn something where it
hits and grab and pull up the lead fast to prevent burning a hole in
something. Done that few times. Better yet, keep that cord
retained so iron just swings harmlessly instead of hitting the floor.
