All this ranting has been mildly amusing but is now quickly headed
into the annoying category. Seeing's how this is the "Classic
Computing List" and that various members of the list actually own
the hardware in question, why don't we put our money where our
mouths are and actually come up with a "Shootout". First we
come up with the ground rules (general hardware configs, various
application test cases, etc). If we could find the approriate VAX
hardware somewhere near the next VCF, then we could use the
VCF crowd itself to act as our load and it would make for a cool
and actually on topic demonstration. Of course this doesn't have
to be limited to VAXen or 486/66's, actually having a "modern" pc
as comparision would also be interesting. And if someone has
another favorite example of early big iron, that could also be used.

So how about it, let's stop blowing air and let's start actually doing
something.
