A common cause of this in Sun land is bad memory. A somewhat less
common cause, but still plausible given that you're (out of necessity)
running an older version of Solaris is bad code.

It's time for memory diagnostics; while those are running I'd hit
the sunsolve site and start looking for recommended patches for 2.4 --
although given the symptoms you've described I'm guessing that it's
a memory problem.
