Probably a bearing going bad. Or worse. I had a major hard drive crash
in the recent past and it ended up being the internal filter coming loose
and jamming itself into the heads. It had been screeching (probably as
you describe) occasionally for a couple years. I'd been meaning to
replace it, but I thought it was the OTHER drive (the unimportant one)
that was making the noise :(

Anyway, probably bearings going bad, something like that.
