I agree with this, but as Sellum pointed out before there is a solution
and that's the time extension. Make a last millisecond bid and it gets
extended x minutes. Snipe software could still be used (as a software
agent) but it wouldn't allow for the last split second frantic bidding.
Technically ebay does have an option to post your max bid but there are
ways to abuse that (which I don't do).
