Live auctioneers will "fail to notice" you for a host of reasons, if they
"can". Unless the auctioneer knows you AND watches you, don't make a subtle
first bid. Put your paddle in the air and make some NOISE ("yes" or "here"
seems to work if screamed with gusto).
