Let me try that again. Processor speeds much in excess of 300MHz
require the use of custom blocks, largely because you need to use
precharge logic. This link refers to a project
using a part from the XC4000XLA family, which maxes out slightly
above 200MHz and isn't very dense -- 500K gates which is far
below what I'd expect to find in a contemporary workstation or
even game console class processor.
Still not sure what this does about extinction of older logic...
