Tubes they are, but "vacuum" would be a misnomer, as nixie tubes are what is
known as "glow discharge" devices. Rather than a vacuum, nixies contain a
atmosphere of noble gasses, such as neon. They are really little more than tiny
neon lamps, with multiple elements.
