As long as we are talking about PICs and the like, what's the general
consensus on Atmel? Besides the BASIC Stamp, the Atmel AT90S8515
is the only microcontroller Radio Shack (since we were talking about
them...) seems to list in their catalog.

I've looked at it - had it in mind to use for a project I was working
on. RS advertises it as a "RISC architecture", but it really isn't very
RISC-like at all as far as I can tell. Has a bunch of I/O on board.
Pinout-compatible with 8051, but (of course) not instruction set
compatible, so you can't just replace an 8051 with one of these.
