Or maybe it never occured to them to understand what's going on inside
because it doesn't matter to them. It is a tool, just like a hammer or a
fork. How it works is inconsquential to, for instance, a mother raising 3
kids.

This sounds more like lack of good educational systems, something the US
is well known for.
