I wouldn't be so extreme in my feeling of doom, Gene. There are easy ways to
recover.

You could get one of the "approved" drives, which might cost $5 on eBay (plus
shipping - be sure to get the thing insured!) or one of the "approved" bridge
boards and a suitable drive.
