As opposed to some people's recommendation to use a very basic system, such as
a microprocessor tutor, in order to learn, I'd prefer a machine with more
bells and whistles. It's a lot more fun if the memory addresses are mapped to
a flashy border or a blippy-bloppy speaker.

The C64 has also got the advantage of being very well-documented and still
having a rather active scene.

Oh, C128 has got a built-in monitor, now that I think about it. And a great
BASIC to boot.
