Two examples of the results of that... AmigaDOS, BeOS. There are others.

Disclaimer - I love the Amiga and have never used BeOS but have nothing against
it. They were popular but eventually orphaned, in part because they did not
receive the blessings of MicroSoft - Word, and eventually Office, in
particular.
