I don't agree. The Chinese charsets which I've seen (there are of course
several) do not particularly look like Japanese ones when viewed on an 8-bit
terminal. Chinese tends to stay primarily within the visible upper 128
characters, whereas Japanese mostly renders as a lot of "square" characters.
I can quite easily see the difference between Japanese and Chinese without any
16-bit rendering software.
