I once disassembled my scanner to investigate the
possibility of removing the entire "plastic edges
of the scanner" all the way to the edge of the
scan area.(Hoping to be able to scan old books
only open to a 90 degree angle.)
It looked like a good idea because the outside
track is inside the scan area. Unfortunately
after I got the scanner apart, I discovered that
the xenon(or whatever) tube not only does not light
all the way to it's end, but it also has an
electrode at the end. It just sticks out too far
and has to extend past the edge of the scan area
in order to illuminate the whole area.
Oh well.
