I've seen this more than a few times myself, even on modern computer
boards...

It could be that it was bent under, still in contact with the socket's
contact, and due to moisture/thermal stresses, the weakened metal
eventually broke. The other half of the lead wasn't in the socket, so this
seems to be a likely scenario.
