HP switched to using a fancy type of ink cartridge a while back, that actually
counts the number of drops that come out of a cartridge, and stop the
cartridge after the number of drops reaches about 1.5 the volume that
should be in the cartridge. Of course, they had some other explanation
for it, but everyone knew it was to prevent refills. I dont know if
your cartridge is one of those types, but it sure sounds like it.
