  The top portion quoted was me, of which you responded to (starting with
``This is true if you've got ... '') and then my response to that. I still
don't know what you actually meant by your response, and my reply was an
attempt to answer what I thought you were trying to say by showing how
coding to the hardware, to get maximum performance, doesn't always work even
if the platform the program was written for doesn't change (significantly).

  The only operating systems that I'm aware of that were made for the DEC
Alpha were VMS (or is that OpenVMS), ULTRIX, Linux and maybe a certain
version of Windows NT. There might have been another UNIX variant made for
the DEC Alpha but I'm not aware of what it could be.
