It does, but I was planning on cashing in frequent flyer miles for
a free ticket (I have enough) and staying with people I know in N.Z.,
eliminating two of the biggest expenses of any trip.

It's how I went to see Hans Franke three years ago - couldn't find
work, found a cheap flight, got to know a crazed Bavarian! Wot a
vacation!

Exactly. Can't get any traction on the job hunt until management
gets through this all, so I might as well spend some of my severance
on a change of venue. I haven't been out of North America since
I went to Germany (made several trips to Canada, but car trips don't
satisfy like long-distance travel). Been considering going back
to Antarctica, but hiring season doesn't start until April.
