I am currently using a VMS machine as the IMAP/SMTP server to answer
your note, I am the system manager in charge for it, I am supporting
several others in Europe, it's just a couple of minutes since my last SH
DEV, so I hope I qualify for the "fresher experience", and you're
perfectly right with all your points.

Also, mounting a disk can be done with either /OVERRIDE=IDENTIFICATION
or with /SYSTEM to make the volume accessible to WORLD, but not with
both at the same time. To get the disk up and flying for everybody on
the node, I'd do a MOU/OVE=ID DUA1: first, to see what volume label it
reports in the %MOUNT-I-MOUNTED message, then a DISM/NOUNL DUA1:,
(/NOUNLOAD will avoid spinning down the disk) and finally a MOU/SYS
DUA1: <id>, where <id> is the label retrieved after the first MOUNT
command.

And, yes, HELP certainly is your friend! In case you don't know which
command to ask for, try HELP HINTS - it will list tasks you may want to
accomplish and commands that will help you do so. And if you get lost in
the HELP command's tree structure, exit with Control-Z and try again: HE
HE ;-)
