An option since it's a KDJ11. I have more than one KDF11 which keeps
me stuck at 2.9BSD.

I have loaded 2.9BSD on a real 11/24 w/RL02 disks. One 10Mb platter
was enough for a basic bin installation. If you wanted source (so
you could rebuild a kernel with only your devices in it to save memory
for your processes), 10Mb is not enough; 20Mb is not enough. If you can
locate an ST251 (40Mb) and the Field Service formatter, you can turn
it into an RD33... not the fastest drive for the box, but it is somewhat
widely available for an MFM drive.
I'd have to agree on the RAM. 1Mb is ok for 2.9BSD (I think the minimum
is 256KB, but I'm not positive), but if I were going to run 2.11, I'd want
more.

Is the PSU really dead or did the harness fry? Take off the steel cover
that's over the drive area. Next, look for an odd-shaped aluminum cover
that sits on the front of the PSU and ducts air around it. It should
have two screws, perhaps four. Look under there and you'll see where the
PSU passes power to the backplane. If you have a harness with two white
connectors and wires that are parallel to the pins, congratulations; it's
a replacement harness. If the connectors are amber with the wires
perpendicular to the power pins, it's an older connector that will
eventually fail. If you remove it and find blackened plastic/metal,
do not use it. The resistance will cause heating which will cause more
oxidation which will increase the resistance, etc.
15 years ago, these things were known to catch fire occasionally.
