There's a book at a local bookstore that describes DECnet in substantial
detail. I know that Macs can speak it with special software. Has anyone
considered a homebrew protocol? I have a book about implementing custom
network protocols, as well as hardware and the other major components of a
computer network. I've been interested in networking for a while, and
started designing hardware and software for networking TRS-80s over RS-232
serial lines with a central server. Never got very far with that. Other
projects beckoned. But in reality, many hobbyists have designed their own
network protocols out of necessity. They wanted to network certain
computers, but no network protocols had been implemented for them, so they
wrote their own protocol, or ported someone else's.
