I don't have kind words for compaq notebooks. They break up and they
don't age well. I know since I fixed one of those too as well as my
former LTE 386s/20 and current aero 4/25.

While you have it apart, tear it down more, when rebuilding it up,
have dab of on last few threads w/ blue loctite to lock all the
screws down from loosening with use. For the hinge and it's
supports, please make a habit of looking over them CAREFULLY and
brace everything if you do find any cracks *especially* for hinge
archors points area on both halves and LCD top. Too often users
mistake the "play" in the display hinge "brake" assembly which was
the loose screws or, cracking or worse breaking up supports.

When I got these notebooks from customers for repairs, even in 3
years old notebook I still find loose screws (D*ll) and a dead Acer
to fix up, very recent model.

I find Solo 2300 better built after fixing all the screws with
loctite. Every one of 2300 has loose screws even the one under the
CPU module. The LCD power/signal cable in solo 2300, and often used
in IBM thinkpads is rolled up loosely so it didn't twist hard like
other brands did. So far haven't looked inside of newest notebooks
besides these two.

IBM was wise enough to use locking materials pre-applied to all
screws used in notebooks as early as '93.
