I don't know what 'MKD' is, but I do know that the right
combination of 'mount' and 'copy', with the proper
parameters will create perfect binary images of anything.
IIRC, just
    'mou/for' (as you do) and
    'cop mua0: f1.dat'
    'cop mua0: f2.dat' ... etc.

BTW which tape drive/controller are you using?
