As others have mentioned, sub-1X drives exist. The reference is
to the speed needed to playback CDDA and hear audio in real-time.

I have an NEC CDR-74. The caddy does not have an aluminum slider
that moves to one side, it splits, like bomb bay doors. Regular
caddies do not work in this drive. I got it from DAK (remember
them pushing CD-ROM drives incessently?) for $280 with DOS drivers
and a Trantor T-128 8-bit SCSI card. I loved it at the time because
I was able to use the same drive on a PC, a Mac and an Amiga.

A DOS application that came with Activision's "Return To Zork" rated
this drive at 0.5X... entirely unsuitable for game play.
