Just looked in my Maplin catalog and the list three types with increasing
complexity. They look like a pretty good intruduction for a youngster.

An exemption was negotiated for kits of parts, otherwise our kit industry
would have been wiped out! The authorities recognize the value of
hands-on experience in encouraging youngsters to take an interest in
technology.
