I'm not sure I would even call this Semi-OT,
All the literature I have says 1992/1993.

Same here, in a DD-20. BTW the cable is pretty standard.

The disks can be read in a PC, so they aren't totally
closed off technology. Some of the software I have
is marked 1995 so it made it a few years at least.
I would like to know the format too but I haven't got
all week to figure it out. Obviously some people out
there in the world still know it and would probably
share if we could just find them.
