Certain instruments are very sensitive to the amount of
radiation present in the steel used to manufacture them, such as some
of the measuring devices sent into space. All steel manufactured
since the detonation of the first atomic bombs have higher levels of
radiation present than that which was manufactured before. There's
more radiation in the air since the advent of the atomic bomb and the
manufacture of steel uses huge quantities of air in the smelting
process and the radiation gets transferred to the finished steel.
