I remember a while ago, when such would have been a deal, some surplus
vendor had 600MB 5.25" SMD drives for $595. He *clearly* stated
that these were *not* MFM/ST506 drives and would *not* work in an
ordinary PC. ISTR, 600MB was around $800-$1000 at the time, for ESDI
and/or SCSI.
I also recall that there's something about the data rate that makes
these potentially incompatible with older interfaces, like the kind
you find on a Qbus or Unibus.
All I've ever owned are largish SMD devices (Fujitsu, mostly), in the
10"-14" realm, so YMMV.
