How do VMS Condists work?

If I had the hardware, I would... at the moment, the only DEC machine
with SCSI is my new (to me) DEC 4000-710. I have an RRD42. I can
theoretically mount the disks, but the 4000 is running DU3.2, not
OpenVMS.

They are labelled with a date and a "x of y". I'm not seeing anything
that says "Open VMS 6.1" or such.
