If you can cluster your VAX and Alpha then you should be able to use the
drive remotely.

Alternatively, if you have enough disk space on the VAX then you could
do what I used to
do - dump the cdrom to a file and mount it as a virtual disk:- several
drivers are available
in the various freeware archives.
