The money might serve as a deterrent to repeat ads from the same
people. Otherwise, we need to decide how high the fee should be to make
it worth our while. The money should be split between the list expenses
(Jay's system, etc.), the person(s) doing the invoicing accounting and
collection, and the individual members of the list. To avoid excessive
accounting load, individuals would NOT be paid unless they accumulate some
sort of threshold amount in a finite time (such as if over $500 per
month).
The business spammers (as opposed to the Nigerian bank transfer guys) can
argue all that they want about whether or not their crap is or is not
"spam" (I'll bet that not a one of them even know the relevant Monty
Python sketch). But they can't dispute that we have a right to charge
legitimate rates for paid advertising.
