DIP packages where still relatively new in the early 70's. Most of the IC's
that I worked with in the 60's into the late 60's and early 70's were
typically flat-packs, or TO-5 style either in metal or molded plastic cases.
This is a big chip with 40 pins. It is my guess that the holes where there
to assure alignment during DIP insertion. I remember when DIPs came out. I
never thought they would last. Boy was I wrong. Regards - Mike
