hard drive making weird noises

IIRC, that's what they do when they start to fail. Get your data backed up
ASAP. That thing'll be dead in two weeks tops.

Got a CD or DVD recorder and a stack of blank, good quality (Verbatim
DatalifePlus SuperAZO) media?
