Maybe, but there's no real way to check. One could look for 'suspicious'
addresses in the subscriber list, but that's very prone to failure.

Wouldn't work. Some people might be on vacation, ignoring list mail for a
few weeks, apt to delete the request without reading it, or just too lazy to
respond. With over 600 subscribers, we probably have people in each
category.
